Effect of Weight on Gyroplane Performance
Increasing the weight of a gyroplane, such as carrying additional passengers, baggage or fuel, affects its take-off, flight and landing performance.
The main effects of increased weight include:
Longer Take-off Roll – A heavier gyroplane requires more lift to become airborne and generally needs a higher take-off speed. The additional weight also reduces acceleration, resulting in a longer take-off roll.
Higher Rate of Descent – During a power-off approach or landing, a heavier gyroplane generally has a higher rate of descent because the rotor must support a greater weight. This requires more upward airflow through the rotor disk to maintain autorotation.
