10.4 Human Factors Models and Programmes
10.4.2 Define human factors as used in an aviation context.
Human Factors is the study of human capabilities and limitations, and how people interact with:
- aircraft;
- equipment;
- procedures;
- the environment; and
- other people.
The purpose of Human Factors is to understand how human performance can affect aviation safety and how systems, equipment and procedures can be designed to reduce errors and improve performance.
Human Factors draws on three main areas:
- Aviation Medicine;
- Aviation Psychology; and
- Aviation Ergonomics.
Aviation Medicine
Aviation Medicine considers the physical and mental health of aviation personnel and their fitness to fly.
Aviation Psychology
Aviation Psychology considers human behaviour and mental performance, including:
- decision-making;
- stress;
- workload;
- communication; and
- human error.
Aviation Ergonomics
Aviation Ergonomics considers the design of aircraft, equipment and workplaces so they suit human capabilities and limitations.
