09 Circuit Introduction

The circuit is an orderly traffic pattern used to position the gyroplane for landing while minimising the risk of conflict with other aircraft.

Aerodromes attract aircraft, so rules and procedures are required to maintain an orderly and predictable flow of traffic.

Knowing that aircraft should be following these published procedures helps the pilot identify the runway in use, anticipate where other aircraft are or may be, and understand the order or priority for take-off and landing.

Having right of way does not remove the pilot-in-command’s responsibility to avoid a collision.

The standard circuit pattern and aerodrome-specific procedures are published in AIP New Zealand.  The rules governing circuit procedures are contained in Part 91, Subpart C.

The skills developed in the preceding exercises are now brought together in the circuit. Most of the required skills are already familiar to the student, with the principal new skill being the landing of the gyroplane.

This briefing is based on a normal left-hand circuit, assuming nil wind or a wind directly down the runway. Variations should be introduced progressively as the student gains experience.
